A Brief History of Communications for the Banning, Beaumont and San Gorgonio Pass, California
We believe that in order to fully understand the present and prepare for the future we must know our past
Way back around 1875, the first telegraph office came with the building of the Southern Pacific railroad depot in the San Gorgonio Pass.
Some folks actually had telegraph keys in their homes. As with most small communities of the period, small privately owned local telephone companies provided service within their limited area; however, it was very unusual to have access out to other exchanges.
1886- The San Francisco based Sunset Telephone Company reports that they are making a great effort to extend their Los Angeles operation to embrace Cucamonga, Ontario, Colton, San Bernardino and Riverside.
They also express that the merchants and other persons engaged in business or professional duties will find that they can no longer be without this great labor-saving convenience.
1890- The Sunset Telephone Company buys the San Diego Telephone Company. By the purchase of the San Diego plant and all the wire lines within, The Sunset Company now owns the majority of Telephone Exchanges in all of California.
1898- The Sunset Telephone Company's Riverside exchange is planning to extend its service to Banning and Beaumont as well as other communities within the Southern California territory. Eventually, this line will be connected with a long distance line so that calls can be made to other points.
1903- The San Bernardino Home Telephone and Telegraph Company and the Redlands Home Telephone and Telegraph Company reports that they will be extending their phone services into Banning and Beaumont.
1905- The Southwestern Home Telephone Company constructed a phone exchange in Banning.
1905- The Southwestern Home Telephone Company from Redlands, California extended a trunk line into the Beaumont/Banning exchange, thus linking the San Gorgonio Pass with Redlands and beyond.
1908- By a deal which has been consummated between the Pacific States Telephone and Telegraph Company, commonly known as the "Bell" or "Sunset Company," and the Southwestern Home Telephone and Telegraph Company, the former transfers to the latter all of its local lines, exchanges, instruments, connections, etc., except such as are used for long-distance purposes, in Redlands, El Casco, Beaumont, Banning, Forest Home, Hemet, San Jacinto, Sage, Bergman, Oak Grove, Perris, Warner's Ranch, Elsinore, Armado, Temecula, and Moreno.
To the people of the towns affected the deal means that the Southwestern Company will have full control of the local business after February 1 and that the long-distance will be handled by the Sunset Telephone Company.
1910- Several commercial structures were destroyed by a large fire reportedly caused by a fireworks explosion on July the 3rd of this year. Telephone communications were cut off to Beaumont when the fire damaged the main trunk line from the central station located in Banning.
1918- The Southwestern Home Telephone Company which operates in Banning and Beaumont as well as other communities, issued an order forbidding the use of the wires for communication in the German language during the period of war.
1926- On December 27th of this year, the Sweetwater Water Corporation was organized under the laws of California. On August 20, 1935, they changed their name to the California Water and Telephone Company. They supplied telephone service to Banning and Beaumont as well as other local communities.
It has been recorded that the nickname for the above-referenced company was "Drip and Tinkle".
1945- The AT&T Telephone Company has requested permission from the FCC to place an eight-tube coaxial cable from Atlanta Georgia via Phoenix to Los Angeles via the San Gorgonio Pass at a cost of $5,000.000.00. The new cable will supply a large number of additional long-distance circuits and will come on line sometime in 1947.
1964- The California Water and Telephone Company was acquired by General Telephone and Electronics Company.
1969- A fire broke out at the General Telephone Company repeater station located between Banning and Beaumont temporarily knocking out lease lines in the Palm Springs area and toll lines in the Desert Hot Springs and High Desert area.
2000- On June 20th, Bell Atlantic acquires GTE and changes the name to Verizon.
2015- On July 1st, Verizon sold their California wireline properties to Frontier Communications.
In regard to television, back in the 50's and 60's to receive Television transmissions in your home you needed a huge multi-element TV antennae mounted at least 10 to 15 feet above your roof line in order to capture channels 2, 4, 5, 7, and if you were lucky, sometimes channels 11 and 13, all the way from Mount Wilson in Los Angeles. That was a good 65 miles as the crow flies. Getting cable TV back in the early 70's made many Beaumont TV buff's very happy.
Both Banning and Beaumont have come along way from the advent of the telegraph to having high speed Broadband Internet and far more choices for phone services. Our grandparents would be stunned at the choices we now enjoy and take for granted. We can only imagine what will be the norm in another 100 years.
Thank you for visiting. I hope that you found this brief glimpse of history highlighting the role of telephone and radio communications for the Banning and Beaumont area interesting.
Commtel Communications maintains an extensive library of technical history and events for the Southern California territory. While this information is deemed to be accurate, it is by no means to be considered a scholarly reference.
